Being diagnose with Diabetes in middle age may see your life spiral out of control. It may lead to depression, anxiety, multiple mood disorders not to mention dietary restrictions. That you have never had to think about in the past and if it is, then need to resolve with personal care assistant provider.

This is a brief account of how my dad coped with this disease. Since its onset in his mid to late forties until today.

My dad is one of the fittest people I have known. This is not something I am saying, anyone that knew him in his prime wouldn’t hesitate to say the same. My dad is also one of the most positive, strong-willed and determined people I have ever known. I believe this strong will is the driving force that helped him achieve so much in life.

He is one of the most decorated athletes in Pakistan. And he has competed in National and International competitions winning 15 Gold, 9 silver and 6 bronze medals. Not to mention several cups and trophies that line our mantles at our family residence.

My dad has also held the Pakistan Record in Shot-put and Discus throw for over 15years.

In order to achieve these feats my dad’s diet and training regime was pretty intense. My mum still speaks of how at one meal he would eat 10-12 parathas (naan bread) with 10 egg omelets. He was the picture of health and I doubt he had ever seen a doctor until he began to have episodes of numbness in his hands and feet, with the possibility of having to be referred to personal home care services agencies.

After visiting the family doctor shortly, my dad diagnosed with diabetes. He referred to personal care services for further information, it was the year 1992. The first thing his doctor recommended was to drastically cut down his food intake. And also reduce body weight to help with personal home healthcare through a personal home health care agency.

At his competitive best my dad weighed in at 255lbs, the doctors recommended that he half his weight and half his food intake. They put him on heavy meds. My dad did try but in the end what he understood like many other diabetics was that if he took his diabetes meds he could keep eating the way he had been eating all along.

Fast forward to 2018 and after numerous “close calls”, my dad’s diabetes had worsened to the point where he was reading 22.0 fasting and this had gone unchecked for many years and he was recommended a personal care assistant. So much so that he was irregular with meds, never went to get blood work, never went to the doctor for a check up.

He was surviving on Gods good humor and an above average gene pool. As a result of the unchecked sugar levels there is significant damage to his organs. He is at end stage renal failure, high risk of stroke, blood pressure, hyper tension and cataract he also suffered from diabetic diarrhea. The soles on his feet are non-responsive and he is looking for personal care at home in Canada.
